Chicago Bears (1-3) at Green Bay Packers (4-0) -3
This week the Chicago Bears travel to chilly Lambeau Field to play the resurgent Green Bay Packers. It seems the oddsmakers still have a Super Bowl hangover as the Pack are undefeated and the Bears are struggling with one victory but the Pack are only favored by a field goal. Last week the Packers beat the Minnesota Vikings 23-16 while the Bears lost to Detroit Lions 37-24 giving up an NFL record 34 points in the 4th quarter. Green Bay Quarterback Brett Favre recently passed Dan Marino as the QB with the most touchdowns in NFL history. For the Bears they are in trouble at the QB position as journeymen Brian Griese recently took the over for Rex Grossman. This is a big game for the Bears, as if they lose they will be 1-4 and Green Bay will be 5-0 and early in the season that is a huge difference in the NFC North. The Bears need to right their ship but it won't be easy in Lambeau where the Packers are always tough.
The Bears are led by recently installed Brian Griese at QB ( 286 yds 2 TD 3 INT) who did not have the game that many in Chicago had hoped after dealing with the inept play of Grossman for the first few weeks. Greise will have to play better running the NFL's 30th ranked offense. The Bears rushing attack is led by Cedric Benson (239 yds 1 TD) who has not played well to start the year and having already fumbling 3 times. He will have to pick up some yards to keep the Green Bay defense from focusing on Griese. Griese's main targets are Bernard Berrian (24 rec 320 yds) and Tight End Desmond Clark (16 rec 169 yds 1 TD). The Chicago passing attack is not strong and Benson needs to carry the load offensively if the Bears have any chance of winning. The Bears once feared defense is ranked 15th (19th against the pass 11th against the rush) and was embarrassed last week giving up 34 points in one quarter to the Lions. The D is led by Brian Uralcher (22 tackles 3 sacks) who has played decent but has not dominated like he has in recent years. The Bears secondary needs to have a good game and the front line has to get to Favre so he does not have time to pick them apart. The Bears have to play an all around better game in every facet if they hope to be victorious.
The Packers are led by future Hall of Fame QB Brett Favre (1205 yds 8 TD 2 INT) who has played much better this year than in the previous couple of years and is the main reason the Pack are undefeated. The Packers are ranked 12th in total offense but dead last in rushing. The Packers rushing offense is bad as their leading rusher is DeShawn Wynn, who only has 87 yards rushing. The Packers running backs have been banged up and it is a wonder they are 4-0 and are lucky Favre is playing like he did in his prime. Favre's main targets are Donald Driver (323 yds 2 TD) and James Jones (232 yds 1 TD). Favre is spreading the offense with several receivers catching his bullets. On defense the Packers are mediocre, ranked 19th overall but have come up with the big plays when it counts. Linebacker Nick Barnett (35 tackles 2 INT) has played great for a team-oriented defense like Green Bay. The Packers rushing D is ranked 15th against the run and need to stop Cedric Benson, and if they do they will be sitting pretty. If they can get to Griese and force him to beat them in the air they will win this game. The Pack are flying high and the Bears are struggling. Look for Favre and company to play well at home and easily cover the spread staying undefeated and atop the NFC North.
